Will Synthetic Drug MDMA Be a Treatment for Alcoholism?

In a first of its kind clinical study in London, the synthetic drug MDMA will be tested for its ability to treat alcoholism.

Twenty volunteers who are heavy drinkers will attend eight therapy sessions. In two of the sessions, they will be given MDMA. There will be a follow-up at three-, six- and nine-month intervals.

MDMA takes about 45 minutes to kick in. It is being studied for its ability to break down the feelings of fear that some individuals experience while in therapy.
